Málaga car rental: what do excess, deposit and desk extras mean?
Updated October 9, 2026 · 5 min read
The price shown first is not enough to choose a Málaga rental car. Open the conditions and check five items before paying: excess, deposit, accepted payment card, fuel policy and additional-driver charge. CDW usually limits certain damage liability; it does not automatically mean every panel, tyre, window or incident is covered. The deposit is a temporary card hold, not the same thing as the excess. Their amounts vary by supplier and vehicle, so no single figure applies to every booking.

Excess is the amount still at risk
An excess is the part of an eligible damage claim that remains your responsibility under the rental agreement. If CDW is included, read which damage it covers and which components are excluded. A low rental price can sit beside a high excess; a more expensive rate can include broader protection. Neither is automatically better until you compare the same vehicle class and protection level.
“Full protection” sold by a comparison site may reimburse eligible costs after the rental company charges you. Protection sold at the desk may instead reduce what the rental company claims from you. Those are different arrangements with different evidence and claim procedures. Read who provides the cover, who charges first and what documents a claim requires.
The deposit is a card-authorisation question
The deposit is the amount the rental company blocks to secure fuel, damage and other contractual charges. It reduces the card’s available limit during the rental. Check the amount in your chosen offer, whether the main driver must present a physical credit card, which card types are accepted, and how the supplier handles release after return.
A booking paid online does not prove that the card at the desk meets the supplier’s requirements. The name, available limit and card type can matter. If the conditions are unclear, ask the supplier before travel and keep the written answer. Turning up with an unsuitable card can leave only expensive alternatives or no vehicle.
Extras that alter the comparison
Fuel terms deserve a complete sentence, not a badge. Full-to-full normally means returning the car with the same fuel level; other policies can include prepaid fuel or service charges. Photograph the gauge and keep the final receipt where the contract requests it.
An additional driver, young-driver condition, child seat, after-hours collection or one-way return may add a charge. Minimum age and driving-licence requirements differ between suppliers—check the individual booking page rather than relying on a general Málaga rule. Also inspect the collection location: an airport-labelled offer may use a shuttle rather than a desk in the terminal.
At collection and return
Before leaving, record every side of the car, wheels, glass, fuel gauge and mileage, and have existing marks added to the report. Check that the agreement matches the fuel and protection terms you selected. At return, allow time for inspection and retain the closing document. These steps do not promise that a dispute cannot happen; they preserve evidence of the vehicle you accepted and returned.
The best choice is the offer whose deposit fits your card, whose excess you understand and whose collection arrangement suits your arrival—not automatically the cheapest tile. Compare those terms at home, where declining or changing an option is easier than at a busy airport desk.
